Seattle To Stop Banking With Wells Fargo!February 10, 2017
Tuesday, the Seattle City Council voted to stop banking with Wells Fargo, at the urging of community members including the Northwest Accountability Project, citing its combined $185 million fine for opening fake accounts on behalf of its customers, its support and profiting from the private prison industry and its financing of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The move will pull $3 billion from Wells Fargo. According to the Seattle Times, “In addition to terminating the city’s contract with Wells Fargo, the bill would also require that social-justice principles be considered when awarding all city contracts, including construction projects.”
Right here in the Pacific Northwest, senior Wells Fargo executive Jeffrey Grubb serves as one of three paid trustees of the Murdock Charitable Trust who oversee the trust’s giving. The Murdock Trust, with Grubb as a trustee, has given millions of dollars to anti-worker and anti-LGBTQ organizations, including the Freedom Foundation and the Alliance Defending Freedom. The Alliance Defending Freedom is a group behind both North Carolina’s HB 2 “Bathroom Bill” and Indiana’s law allowing discrimination based on business owners’ personal beliefs.
The Freedom Foundation is a Washington State based organization that has recently moved into both Oregon and California. The Murdock Trust has also given hundreds of thousands of dollars to this anti-worker group that has opposed raising the minimum wage, paid sick leave and increasing education funding.
New Video Highlights Wells Fargo Executive’s Ties To Funding HateSeptember 16, 2016
This week, we launched a new video highlighting Wells Fargo senior executive Jeffrey Grubb’s position as a trustee of the Murdock Charitable Trust. The Murdock Trust is a Vancouver, Washington-based funder that donates millions of dollars each year to extremist organizations like the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Freedom Foundation. We are calling on Wells Fargo and Mr. Grubb to distance themselves from the Murdock Trust.
The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is one of the major proponents of North Carolina’s so-called “bathroom bill,” HB 2, and has opposed anti-bullying efforts in public schools. The group has also promoted and defended laws in other countries that allow for homosexuals to be imprisoned. ADF’s co-founder even suggested that AIDS is one way God punishes the LGBTQ community. The Murdock Trust has provided significant funding to the Freedom Foundation, a Washington state-based group whose staff has opposed paid sick leave and a living wage. The Freedom Foundation’s managing editor, Jeff Rhodes, even called a $15 minimum wage “an idea so stupid only liberals can believe it.”
The Murdock Trust also donated over $200,000 to the Portland Fellowship, a group that actually conducted the abhorrent practice of gay conversion therapy.
Share our video, and tell Wells Fargo and Jeffrey Grubb to distance themselves from the Murdock Trust.
In reaction to recent news reports, (Willamette Week; Portland Business Journal) customers and community supporters entered the Portland Wells Fargo Headquarters and demanding to meet with Jeffery Grubb, a Wells Fargo top executive. Wells Fargo security refused to let the group talk to Grubb, who helps direct the controversial Murdock Charitable Trust, located in Vancouver, WA.
The Murdock Trust is a major funder of anti-LGBT groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Arizona group behind a recent wave of efforts to repeal LGBT discrimination protections in North Carolina and other states. More here.
